The Entire Community is invited to the Sofia Ashel Memorial Torah and Holy Ark Dedication
From sadness to remembering. After facing the tragic loss of his dear wife almost one year ago, Chabad benefactor and Scripps Ranch resident Dan Ashel and his family turned tragedy into helping the local community. While on vacation in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico the Ashel’s along with three other friends suffered a terrible car accident. All of the passengers in the van lost their lives save Mr. Dan Ashel.
While saying Kaddish at the CHA middle school synagogue during the week immediately following the accident, Dan undertook to commission the writing of an exquisite miniature Torah scroll in memory of his dear wife by a scribe in Israel. In addition he commissioned top craftsmen in Israel to build an Ark by hand to feature along the entire eastern wall of the Chabad Hebrew Academy synagogue to house the synagogues Torah scrolls.
In the effort to create a fitting legacy in memory of his beautiful wife Sofia. Dan traveled to Israel and New York to oversee the details, returning with a beautiful handmade silver crown, Yad, an eternal flame for the synagogue and hand embroidered covers for the Torah and Ark.
The Sofia Ashel Torah and Ark are fittingly being given to the children and the community to enjoy the beauty and dedication of an exemplary wife, mother and friend in perpetuity.
On Sunday, February 11th all are invited to join the Ashel family and the entire CHA community for the Torah and Ark Dedication celebration and ceremony on the first anniversary of passing of Mrs. Sofia Ashel of blessed memory. Participants can take part in writing the final letters of the holy torah scroll and are invited to take part in an ancient Jewish ceremony welcoming the community Torahs to their new ark.
