"From the Statue of Liberty to Times Square, you can definitely tell the nation has multiple faces. This trip was fast-paced, exciting, educational, fun, stimulating and so much more! This is an experience that I will never forget and am truly thankful I had the opportunity to be a part of." - Liam A.
Students spent six days in New York City, exploring historic landmarks, new and advanced technology centers, and their own Jewish heritage.
The itinerary took students to many places that they had previously learned about in the classroom.
Immigration was a topic studied in both general studies and Judaic studies classes, and it became incredibly real when students had the chance to sail right up to the Statue of Liberty and sit inside the Great Hall at the Ellis Island Immigration Center. Making history come alive is a goal of every teacher, and this trip certainly helped students truly see and feel what immigrants went through many years ago.
"It amazed me to see the history of so many American families and how much they had to - and actually did - go through to just enter the United States. This museum will stay with me forever." Tohar K.
Students also had the chance to investigate the "new" New York by visiting museums that focused on the integration of the most advanced technology around. The Sony Wonder Technology Lab was a student favorite. Guests received personal ID cards at the beginning of the tour - complete with picture, color choice, and interest inventory - and logged in at each station in the Lab, which allowed them to track their learning.
With a wide variety of exhibits, students were able to manipulate robotic cars, develop their own video games, and even edit a movie preview for sound effects, images, and animation! The high-light of the Lab was definitely seeing animation happen right in front of their eyes, as one exhibit tracked a guest's moves and projected them onto an animated character after explaining the complex process involved.
"This Lab was invigorating! The advanced technology blew me out of the water! The games were revolutionary and interactive - I am going to buy my own animation studio soon!" - Elan O.
Another important part of this trip was seeing the various Jewish communities in New York. Students could not believe the plethora of Kosher restaurants, and they were warmed by the genuine embrace of all the families that hosted them and visited with them.
"You could really feel the Jewish atmosphere in the air. The people were kind and generous, and the food was delicious! I can't wait to go back again!" - Avraham P.
Upon return on Monday, students were exhausted, but all wore giant smiles and carried memories that will last them a lifetime. They had the chance to see the new and old New York, make their education come to life, and practice old traditions in a new setting. All in all, the trip was a major success!
Thank you to Rabbi Smoller, Mrs. Boyd and super chaperon Mrs. Karen Aron!
